Is a bookcase ESA eligible in Arizona?
It depends. Allowability of a bookcase turns on the specific conditions below. Must not exceed 40 sq ft.
Conditions that decide it
- Must not exceed 40 sq ft
How big a bookcase Arizona ESA will cover
A bookcase is a Tier 1 student material, but the handbook caps the footprint at 40 square feet so ESA is buying a study furnishing, not room furniture. Under the cap it needs no curriculum document. Over it, the same purchase reclassifies as a prohibited home furnishing.
The mistake families make
Built-in and wall-system shelving. A floor-to-ceiling library wall or a modular room-sized shelving system clears 40 square feet of face area easily, flipping an otherwise-fine purchase into a repay item. Watch the receipt too: an assembly or installation charge riding along is separately prohibited.
The allowable path nearby
A standard freestanding bookcase under 40 square feet is allowable with no curriculum document — just keep the itemized receipt showing the unit and its dimensions, and leave any white-glove assembly fee off the ESA card.
The receipt still has to be complete
A yes on allowability doesn't survive an incomplete receipt. Every receipt needs the vendor's name, address, and contact; the date; a receipt or order number; an itemized description; and the itemized and total amounts. Missing any field can get the expense rejected — and undocumented debit-card purchases past the quarterly deadline must be repaid.
