Home / Can I buy…? / home furnishings and fixtures
Are home furnishings and fixtures ESA eligible in Arizona?
No. Home furnishings and fixtures are on the unallowable purchases list in the SY2025-26 ESA Parent Handbook. Buying them with ESA funds risks the expense being disallowed and repayment being required.
Worth knowing
Student desk+chair, bookcase ≤40 sq ft, small activity table, and desk organizers ARE allowed as Tier 1.
Why ADE says no to home furnishings
Furniture furnishes the house, and the house belongs to the household — wall art, floor lamps, garage storage, lockers, cabinets, nightstands, and vanity desks are all named on the prohibited list. But this category is unusual: the handbook carves a precise student-workspace exception out of it, and the carve-out is where families get tripped.
The mistake families make
The lookalike items. A vanity desk marketed as a "student desk." A floor lamp for the reading corner when only small desk/reading lamps qualify as school supplies. A storage cabinet when only a desk organizer or small file drawer is allowed. Each prohibited item has an allowable twin one size smaller or one purpose narrower.
The allowable path nearby
The student's actual workspace is generously covered as Tier 1: a desk (up to two-person) and chair, a bookcase up to 40 sq ft, a small activity table, desk organizers, dry-erase boards and easels, even a school rug up to 35 sq ft. Buy the version scaled to a student, not the version that furnishes a room.
