Are video game consoles and accessories ESA eligible in Arizona?
No. Video game consoles and accessories are on the unallowable purchases list in the SY2025-26 ESA Parent Handbook. Buying them with ESA funds risks the expense being disallowed and repayment being required.
Why ADE says no to game consoles
Consoles are entertainment devices by statute — named out with TVs and telephones — and the exclusion extends to the whole accessory ecosystem: controllers, charging docks, gaming headsets. Primary purpose is the test, and a console's primary purpose is play.
The mistake families make
The educational-game argument. Minecraft Education, typing games, coding titles — genuinely educational software exists for consoles, and educational software is Tier 1 allowable. But the software rule can't launder the hardware: the same title on a laptop is a clean purchase; the console it would otherwise run on never is. Watch the accessory side too — a "gaming headset" reads differently on a receipt than the educational headphones the handbook allows.
The allowable path nearby
Run educational titles on allowable hardware: laptops, desktops, and tablets are statutory categories, and educational software and apps are Tier 1 on top of them. For audio, educational headphones and earbuds are explicitly allowable supplemental material.
