Are instrument accessories and maintenance ESA eligible in Arizona?

Yes. Instrument accessories and maintenance are general education supplemental material under the SY2025-26 ESA Parent Handbook — allowable for all ESA students with no curriculum documentation currently required. A complete itemized receipt is still required.

Can ESA pay for guitar strings or instrument maintenance

Instrument accessories and maintenance — strings, reeds, bows, rosin, repairs — are Tier 1 with no curriculum document. The consumables and upkeep around an instrument are treated as ordinary educational supplies.

The mistake families make

The instrument itself is a different animal. A guitar, violin, or keyboard is Tier 2 and needs a curriculum document, and renting an instrument through a qualified school is a school fee on yet another channel. Buying the instrument on the no-doc assumption you'd use for strings is the classic miss.

The allowable path nearby

For strings, reeds, bows, and repairs, buy directly and keep the itemized receipt — no document needed. When you're buying the instrument itself, plan for the Tier 2 curriculum document, or rent through a qualified school as a school fee.

The receipt still has to be complete

A yes on allowability doesn't survive an incomplete receipt. Every receipt needs the vendor's name, address, and contact; the date; a receipt or order number; an itemized description; and the itemized and total amounts. Missing any field can get the expense rejected — and undocumented debit-card purchases past the quarterly deadline must be repaid.
