Whether a classroom rug is ESA eligible in Arizona

A school mat or learning rug — alphabet, number, or circle-time mats — is Tier 1 up to 35 square feet. Past that it stops being a teaching prop and becomes an area rug, which is a prohibited home furnishing.

The mistake families make

The big living-room play rug. A 5-by-8-foot rug is already 40 square feet, over the cap, and a room-sized rug is plainly a furnishing. Decorative rugs with no clear educational print are the more common rejection.

A circle-time or alphabet learning mat at or under 35 square feet is allowable as-is. Keep the listing's dimensions on or with the receipt so the size is provable at a glance.
