Home / Can I buy…? / AP exams, SAT/ACT, and test prep
Are AP exams, SAT/ACT, and test prep ESA eligible in Arizona?
Yes. AP exams, SAT/ACT, and test prep are allowable under a statutory ESA purchase category, with their own documentation and channel rules.
Can ESA pay for SAT, ACT, or AP exam fees
Standardized achievement tests, AP exams, college admission exams like the ACT and SAT, and their prep courses are a statutory category. Both the exam fee and the preparation course qualify — useful for homeschool families who need to arrange testing independently.
The mistake families make
Mostly the edges of "prep." The category covers the exam and prep courses for it; private subject tutoring that isn't test prep belongs in the tutoring category with its credential rules. And registration through a school sometimes lands the fee on a school invoice — fine, but then it's documented as a school fee, not a testing receipt.
The allowable path nearby
Register, pay the fee, and keep the confirmation showing the student, exam, and amount. For prep, an enrolled prep course documents itself; a private test-prep tutor travels the tutoring route, credential and all.
The receipt still has to be complete
A yes on allowability doesn't survive an incomplete receipt. Every receipt needs the vendor's name, address, and contact; the date; a receipt or order number; an itemized description; and the itemized and total amounts. Missing any field can get the expense rejected — and undocumented debit-card purchases past the quarterly deadline must be repaid.
