Can ESA pay for an educational magazine subscription

Educational periodical subscriptions are Tier 1 with no curriculum document. An ongoing subscription to an educational magazine is allowable as instructional material, on a single-user basis.

The mistake families make

Subscription versus membership. The handbook allows an educational periodical subscription but prohibits shopping-club memberships — so buying magazine access through an Amazon Prime or Costco-style membership is out, even though the magazine itself is fine. Multi-user or household subscriptions also break the single-user rule.

The allowable path nearby

Subscribe directly to the periodical on a single-user basis, not through a membership wrapper. Keep the itemized receipt showing the subscription and term, and tag it to the subject it supports.

The receipt still has to be complete

A yes on allowability doesn't survive an incomplete receipt. Every receipt needs the vendor's name, address, and contact; the date; a receipt or order number; an itemized description; and the itemized and total amounts. Missing any field can get the expense rejected — and undocumented debit-card purchases past the quarterly deadline must be repaid.
