When ESA can pay for educational or psychological evaluations
Educational and psychological evaluations are a disability-track expense — with one sharp limit: a universal-eligibility student cannot use ESA funds for an IEE to establish disability eligibility in the first place. ESA can pay for evaluations within the disability track; it can't fund the test that would create the higher-award eligibility.
The mistake families make
Exactly that chicken-and-egg move — a universal family paying for an evaluation hoping to qualify for the disability award. That specific use is prohibited. Evaluations also need the same clean paperwork as any service: provider credentials and an itemized invoice.
The allowable path nearby
For a student already in the disability track, evaluations tied to the educational program are eligible with proper documentation. If you're a universal family seeking to establish eligibility, that first evaluation is an out-of-pocket step — once a designation exists, the broader disability-track services (therapies, an aide, assistive tech) open up.
The receipt still has to be complete
A yes on allowability doesn't survive an incomplete receipt. Every receipt needs the vendor's name, address, and contact; the date; a receipt or order number; an itemized description; and the itemized and total amounts. Missing any field can get the expense rejected — and undocumented debit-card purchases past the quarterly deadline must be repaid.
