The word "required" is the category's boundary. This lane is for books a qualified school or college course actually requires; a homeschool family buying books for its own curriculum isn't using this category — but doesn't need it, because books in general are Tier 1 with no documentation anyway. The miss is overthinking which lane you're in rather than just keeping the receipt.

For school- or college-required texts, keep the receipt alongside something showing the requirement (a syllabus or book list makes the record airtight). For your own homeschool reading, buy through the general books category and skip the question entirely.
The receipt still has to be complete
A yes on allowability doesn't survive an incomplete receipt. Every receipt needs the vendor's name, address, and contact; the date; a receipt or order number; an itemized description; and the itemized and total amounts. Missing any field can get the expense rejected — and undocumented debit-card purchases past the quarterly deadline must be repaid.
