Tablet devices are named in the statutory computer-hardware category — an iPad or Kindle Fire qualifies with no curriculum document, same basis as a laptop.
The mistake families make
Doubling up. A tablet and a laptop and a desktop for one student raises the reasonableness test's quantity question — each device is individually fine, the fleet is not. The other miss is accessorizing into trouble: a cellular data plan is a service, not hardware, and a smartwatch pairing is prohibited outright.
The allowable path nearby
Choose tablet or laptop based on the student's actual work, keep it to a sensible device count, and put cases or styluses as itemized lines. The device plus its educational apps make a coherent, defensible record.
The receipt still has to be complete
A yes on allowability doesn't survive an incomplete receipt. Every receipt needs the vendor's name, address, and contact; the date; a receipt or order number; an itemized description; and the itemized and total amounts. Missing any field can get the expense rejected — and undocumented debit-card purchases past the quarterly deadline must be repaid.
