Are televisions ESA eligible in Arizona?
No. Televisions are on the unallowable purchases list in the SY2025-26 ESA Parent Handbook. Buying them with ESA funds risks the expense being disallowed and repayment being required.
Why ADE says no to televisions
The statute itself — not just the handbook — draws the hardware line: computers, laptops, tablets, calculators, and microscopes are in; televisions are named out, with telephones and game consoles. A TV is a one-way entertainment screen for the living room, whatever educational content occasionally plays on it.
The mistake families make
The big-monitor argument: "the smart TV is just a display for online classes." Form factor and statute both disagree — a television is a television under A.R.S. §15-2402, and streaming a documentary on it doesn't reclassify the device. Projectors marketed for home theater fall in the same entertainment bucket.
The allowable path nearby
The statute's allowable hardware list covers the real need: laptops, desktops, and tablets are allowable as primarily-educational devices, and they display the same online curriculum. Educational DVDs and CDs (Tier 1) and basic A/V players (Tier 1) cover the content side without the living-room screen.
